Thai Airways and Tiger Airways launch new budget carrier
Very accessible: Phuket is linked to nearby Phang-Nga province on the mainland by bridge, but most of its visitors now choose to arrive by air. Phuket International Airport enjoys direct air services to major Asian cities like Hong-Kong, Singapore, Japan and Tapei, and now an increasing number cities outside of Asia, including London, Frankfurt and Perth, and connecting flights to anywhere in the world. The island benefits greatly with this solid infrastructure.
Consistently tropical climate: With temperatures throughout the year averaging 27 degrees Celsius, although there is a short rainy season, residents and visitors alike can expect to maintain healthy suntans at all times of the year.
Phuket was recently identified by Fortune magazine as one of the top retirement destinations in the world for a variety of reasons including the cost of living (1/3 of major European cities), climate, international standard facilities, security, the friendly environment and proximity to affluent regional cities.
Phuket presents today a unique balance of political and economic security, accessibility, low-cost modern convenience and laid back island charm, which appeals to lifestyle and financial investors worldwide. Inland, the visitors will find hills covered in lush tropical vegetation, paddies and plantations.
Internationally branded hotels have made Phuket a new luxury hub. Four and five star hotels in Phuket, including the Sheraton, Le Meridien, JW Marriot, Hilton, Holiday Inn, Dusit and Chedi, to name a few (with more under construction), welcomed more than 1,000,000 visitors in 2006.
Phuket has emerged as a medical tourism destination, due to 2 highly accredited International hospitals, Bangkok Phuket Hospital and Phuket International Hospital. Together they combine for a capacity of 300 beds. They also sport the ability to provide customer service in 10 different languages.
Its rapidly improving infrastructure is giving Phuket all the facilities of any modern community, such as big shopping complexes and international colleges.
Phuket is also well know for its entertainment facilities and foreign communities. There are currently 3 marinas with a total capacity of 520 berths (Boat Lagoon, Royal Phuket Marina and Yacht Haven).
The island also offers excellent golf courses, such as the Blue Canyon, Mission Hills, Laguna, Loch Palm, and so on. The surrounding islands of the Andaman Sea offer a sailing and boating environment second to none in the world.
The neighbouring islands of the Andaman Sea offer a sailing and boating environment second to none in the world. The nearby Similan Islands are recognized as one of the world’s top scuba diving destinations. Fishing, windsurfing, parasailing, jet-skiing and biking make Phuket a sportsman’s dream come true.
The National Disaster Warning Center, now working closely with warning centers in Hawaii and Japan, possesses a vast network of media communication links, radio, television, SMS text message facilities and warning towers. Three warning towers have already been installed in Patong Beach since the 2004 tsunami, each one covering a radius of about 1 km. Fifteen other towers will be installed around the island in the coming months.
However, we can’t minimize the extent of the Tsunami tragedy nor the deep sadness at the loss of life, but we do marvel on how quickly the Island returned to normal. More than 80% of all hotels stayed opened and were unscathed and those that were damaged are now repaired and operating normally.
Located in the Andaman Sea, about 70 percent of Phuket is mountainous with almost 50% still forested (jungle) and a further 25% consist of rubber plantations. The island is linked to the Thai mainland at its northern most point by the Sarasin Bridge. Just over an hour’s fight from Bangkok or Singapore, and with daily connections to most major Asian airports, Phuket is ideally situated for a short break or a relaxing vacation.
The last official census showed about 250,000 people living in Phuket. This figure only includes those registered as resident in Phuket and as there is a significant semi-permanent work force from other provinces of Thailand, many semi-resident foreigners, and up to 75,000 visitors at any one time, it is likely that a more realistic figure would be in the range of 500,000.
The official language is standard Thai, but a local south Thai dialect is widely spoken. 75% of the islanders are Buddhist, 22% Muslim and 3%Christian.
Phuket, is surrounded by 32 smaller islands. The famous Phi Phi Island, which gained fame by being the setting for the movie “The Beach” is within easy reach by boat from Phuket.
The Khao Sok National Park, just to the northeast and off Phuket, features lush tropical rain forests, still remote enough to inhabit wild tigers. Many safaris, daytrips and overnight tours to the national parks and the surrounding islands are available.

Pattaya has been in a construction frenzy the past two years, on all fronts and much more development is planned. Pattaya and its sister resort of Jomtien are seeing a flurry of new hotels, luxury condominiums and top quality housing estates.
Hotel development is always a good indicator of economic progression and many major hotels have now opened their doors with their first entry into this town. Many beachside towers have been built in Wongamat (North Pattaya), on Jomtien Beach and further south in Najomtien, with just a couple erected in Pattaya City itself.
Although Chonburi city is the formal administrative centre of the Eastern Seaboard, Pattaya remains the logical hub for the region. It contains the major shopping and entertainment venues, service businesses, many international schools and several international hospitals, and beautiful beaches.
Pattaya has a 3 kilometer curved shaped beach with refreshing tropical greenery. The northern area is more tranquil and used mostly by the locals.
Jomtien beach with its six kilometers of palm-lined golden sands and warm turquoise seas, gives you the impression of being in paradise. The beaches here have everything for the perfect Thailand holiday, from water sports to sunbathing, sampling the delicious locally caught seafood or treating yourself to a relaxing Thai massage.
Most establishments close late, and the dedicated bargain hunter can find all of Thailand’s best buys, gems and jewelry, tailor-made clothing, handicrafts and more.
There are several large westernized stores. Lotus, Big C and Carrefour are the superstores. While Foodland and Tops are well stocked supermarkets. Royal Garden Plaza, Mike Shopping Mall, Central Festival Center, Outlet Mall are for higher fashion shopping, and places for daytime socialising.
Pattaya probably has more beer bars per square kilometre than any other city in Thailand. The nightlife centre is South Pattaya, with its long promenade facing the bay plus the famous Walking Street. By night, Pattaya comes into its own. World-class shows, all the latest films and enough bars and night clubs to keep you entertained into the wee hours!
For the golfer, it is heaven. You have no other place in Thailand where you can find such a density of golf courses. Pattaya has more than 20 fine golf courses within an hours drive. Most of them have been designed by great names like Nick Faldo, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus… Most of golf courses provide trained caddies, foot massage and spa treatments, at rates unmatched by any in Europe, the US and most Asian countries.
Over 1,540,000 visitors stayed in 4-5 star hotels in 2005, representing a 28% increase over the previous year. The tourism Authority of Thailand reports 4,500,000 visitors coming to Pattaya in 2005 and 2006, an increase of 25% from 2003.
There is plenty to keep the children happily occupied. There is also everything for the sports enthusiast, for couples of all ages seeking rest and relaxation and for those who are simply looking for warm sunshine. There are currently 3 international hospitals with a capacity of 430 beds and it will soon increase by 200 extra beds. International Regent’s School has a branch in Pattaya with a capacity of 750 students.

In property, as often in life, things tend to turn out well for the early bird. But with the market in its current state, we should also consider the fate of the early worm.
For many years, the sharpest investors in Thailand’s property market have reaped solid gains by buying off-plan. By committing early to projects, they have picked up discounts from developers as well as capital gains from a rising market. Continue reading »
Bangkok real estate is an investment in a destination that travellers see as the finest place in the entire world. And so do many Thais, which is why it’s also a great investment.
While Bangkok consistently earns top ranking in tourism surveys, its real estate has options to suit a range of wonderful lifestyles.
The pinnacle of Bangkok real estate is generally seen as a place near Sukhumvit Road, the key highway through the city. Residents here are close to stations on Bangkok’s gleaming skytrain, which brings all the city into reach with brisk, air-conditioned luxury.
What’s more, real estate in this corner of Bangkok can offer rural tranquility right at the heart of this bustling metropolis. In the smaller side-roads off Sukhumvit, it is easy to find a home free from traffic and nestled amid lush trees and verdant lawns.
Bangkok real estate is mainly condominiums, which are especially attractive to foreign buyers, who can get freehold ownership. A condo worth 10 million baht – about €2
00,000, $300,000 or £180,000 – also earns its owner the permanent right to live in Thailand.
But a much smaller investment in real estate in Bangkok can also buy a very desirable and central apartment. For instance, a studio in the hip neighbourhood of Ekkamai puts some of the city’s chicest boutiques and liveliest restaurants on your doorstep, at a price that few of the world’s happening postcodes could match.
In the prestigious neighbourhood of Pathon Yothin, investors in Bangkok real estate can enjoy an upscale lifestyle in a leafy enclave, while just a step away from global business headquarters, international fashion malls, spacious parks, bustling street markets and a spectrum of bars and restaurants.
The knockout appeal of Bangkok real estate is that while it offers substantial capital appreciation – buyers near skytrain stations are especially sure of gains – it is also a gateway into an endlessly fascinating world where ancient spirituality and cutting-edge fashion both come with the warm of timeless courtesy.
