It is important to check the laptop and learn if you can upgrade any components especially networking capabilities. While it may be ideal to have the newest and best technology, sometimes budgets don’t allow for that. Finding a previously owned laptop that will meet your requirements can take time, but the time will be worth finding the laptop that can function best for you.
You should be aware that there are differences between “used” and “refurbished” laptops. It is preferable to get a refurbished laptop as you are less likely to have problems and will have some recourse if you do run into problems.
Don’t get frustrated if everything isn’t perfect right from the start. Remember that people have problems with their brand new computers pretty often as well. Even if you have to fork up some money for small repairs or upgrades, rest assured that your decision was environmentally and economically sound.
Buy a laptop that has its original “recovery CD”. What some sellers do is wipe the drive and put Linux on it because they lost the original Windows disc, i.e. “recovery CD”. This sucks because in reality Windows may run best on that laptop over Linux (due to proprietary hardware with proprietary drivers). The first thing you should do with any used laptop is immediately do a “slow” format of the hard drive (this will mark any bad sectors) then pop in the recovery disc and install the provided Windows OS. If you like it, stick with it. If not, wipe it out and put on Linux.
